All 10 schools that play collegiate football in the Centennial State will be in action this week, as Colorado Mines opens its season at West Texas A&M on Thursday. The Saturday schedule features Northern Colorado (1-0) at Colorado State (0-1)
Although neither school agrees on the number of contests played in the series, the Colorado Collegiate Chronicle’s research indicates that CSU leads Northern Colorado 20-1, with one no-contest. The lone UNC’s win that CSU does not list in its records came in 1899, with a 5-0 Bear victory in Fort Collins. CSU posted a 38-17 victory last season on September 7 at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins.
The Ram home opener is Ag Day in Fort Collins with a 5 p.m. kickoff. The game will be broadcast live on Altitude Sports, Altitude Plus, and the Mountain West Network. The Ag Day and Orange Out home opener is presented by Canvas Credit Union and sponsored by Nutrien and Chevron.
CSU Pueblo’s (1-0) game with Fort Hays State on Thursday at the ThunderBowl marks a revival of a series that was played for 16 straight seasons from 1963 through 1978. The ThunderWolves lead the series 9-7, having won the last four games, highlighted by a 29-6 victory over the Tigers in Hays in their previous meeting on September 16, 1978.
When Colorado (0-1) hosts Delaware on Saturday in Boulder, the Blue Hens will represent the 36th state to have a collegiate football team that the Buffs will line up against. Colorado is 20-14-1 in their first such games heading into this afternoon. READ MORE
From CU Athletics and Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Historian David Plati, Delaware was added to the schedule after Colorado rejoined the Big 12 Conference last year; originally, CU was scheduled to play at Houston, which became a conference game. The Blue Hens are in their first year as a Football Bowl Subdivision program.
This week’s schedule features four games where Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schools face rivals from the Lone Star Conference, starting with the Mines on Thursday. Adams State (0-1) and Colorado Mesa (0-1) will entertain Texas Permian Basin and Eastern New Mexico, respectively, on Saturday, while Western Colorado (1-0) meets Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Fort Lewis (1-0) is the last team to kick off this weekend, playing against Arizona Christian in Phoenix on Saturday evening. The Air Force is idle this week.
