Colorado Mesa meets Minnesota Duluth in NCAA D2 women’s “elite eight”

With a week to prepare, Colorado Mesa will meet Minnesota Duluth on March 24 in the first of four quarterfinal games in the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championships in Pittsburgh, Pa.  BRACKET

With the nation’s longest winning streak among NCAA Division II schools at 33 games, Colorado Mesa (36-1) tips off at 10 a.m. next Tuesday against Minnesota Duluth (23-8) of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.

Colorado Mesa advanced to the quarterfinals with a 65-64 win over Texas Woman’s University in Denton on Monday as three-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference player of the year Olivia Reed Thyne scored 23 points, but her blocked shot in the closing seconds sealed the win for the Mavericks.

Eighth-seeded Minnesota Duluth, the NCAA D2 national runner-up in 2023, defeated second-seeded Concordia University St. Paul 94-87 in two overtimes on Monday to win the Central Region title.    READ MORE

The Bulldogs advanced to the regional finals by eliminating top-seeded and tourney host Minnesota State Mankato, 72-63, and fourth-seeded Central Missouri, 81-48.  MS Mankato was the 2024 D2 champion after defeated Texas Woman’s in the finals.
