Wisconsin controlled the action for over 48 minutes in the NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Championships in Las Vegas on Saturday, but Denver captured its 11th national title in 14 finals by defeating the Badgers 2-1. READ MORE
Denver goalie Johnny Hicks stopped 29 of 30 Badgers shots, with the lone Wisconsin goal scored with 13:36 of the clock in the first period. Hicks was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
The Pioneers (29-11-3), who have now won three of the last five NCAA crowns under the leadership of David Carle, trailed Wisconsin (24-13-2) 1-0 with less than eight minutes left in the title contest before Rieger Lorenz scored his 17 goals of the season at 7:31 in the third period.
Less than seven minutes later, Kyle Chyzowski posted his 13th score of the season with 14:08 on the clock to give Denver the lead at 2-1. Wisconsin, which outshot the Pioneers 30-15.
NOTE I – In two games at the Frozen Four in Las Vegas, DU was outshot 83-41.
