The next day, seven miles north of Dave & Buster’s on Colorado Avenue, fourth annual Sam Batey Sr. Legacy Golf Tournament will be held at Denver City Park Golf Course (3181 E 23rd Ave., 80205).
A four-season starter for the Indians, Batey was the first player to play four straight seasons at the school as Pueblo Junior College became Southern Colorado State College in the fall of 1963.
Batey, who passed away on July 19, 2021, met his wife, Barbara, at Pueblo Junior College in the fall of 1961. Barbara was enrolled in the school as a freshman from New Orleans, and Sam Batey was starting his first year as a student and playing basketball after a standout prep career at Denver East.
Both Barbara and Sam Batey served as principals in the Denver Public Schools system and earned their doctoral degrees from the University of Colorado in the late 1990s. Barbara continues to live in Denver surrounded by her two children (Sam Jr. and Dana) and four grandchildren (Jordan, Brooklyn, Morgan, and Pryce).
The Sam Batey Legacy endowment at CSU Pueblo benefits students from either the Denver Public or Metro Denver school systems that attend the school to play basketball, golf, lacrosse and/or tennis.
Quis Davis, a Denver East prep product, will be the third recipient of the Batey scholarship. After starting his collegiate career at Casper College, Davis played the past two seasons at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo.
Women’s basketball player and Pack All-American Alisha Davis Little was the first recipient of the Batey scholarship for the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 seasons. Dylan Sanders, who was CSU Pueblo’s second-leading scorer and All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference performer, was the 2025-2026 Batey recipient.

Davis Little finished her collegiate career as one of the Centennial State’s most successful women’s basketball players. After starting her career at Northern Colorado, where she was the Big Sky Conference’s top player as a sophomore, Davis Little transferred to CSU Pueblo for its nursing program.
Her final appearance for the ThunderWolves was at the 2025 Colorado Sports Hall of Fame banquet, where she was named the state’s top women’s collegiate athlete for the 2024 calendar year. Davis currently ranks as the Centennial State’s No. 2 all-time scorer (2,621 points, 143 games, 18.3 average) and No. 2 in rebounds (1,382, 143, 9.7).
