After spending his first three seasons in St. Louis as a reliever, Leahy has started 21 games for the Cardinals this season with a 7-4 record.
Growing up just north of Denver, the Erie High School product first caught the region’s attention as a dominant prep arm, earning Boulder County Player of the Year honors and pitching in the High School Futures Game at Coors Field.
Rather than jumping straight to a major Division I powerhouse, Leahy stayed close to home and built his foundational legacy at Colorado Mesa University. In Grand Junction, he carved up opposing hitters, going 22-2 with a 3.13 ERA and racking up 188 strikeouts. His stellar collegiate career culminated in a standout 2017 season, during which he was named the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame’s Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year.
Professional Development and Grinding Through the Ranks
The St. Louis Cardinals selected Leahy in the 17th round of the 2018 MLB Draft. Early in his professional journey, success did not come easily. He experienced heavy lumps in the minor leagues, including a tough 2021 campaign in Double-A. However, the Cardinals organization valued his resilience and heavily relied on his adaptability.
After making his MLB debut as a reliever in 2023 and spending the majority of 2024 carving out a role in the St. Louis bullpen, Leahy truly found his footing during a heavy workload in 2025. Known for maximizing extension on his pitches and generating elite movement—particularly on his breaking ball—Leahy transitioned into a full-time starting pitcher role for the Cardinals. His ability to navigate major league lineups has transformed him into a reliable, valuable arm in the St. Louis rotation.
