With wins last Thursday in their season openers, CSU Pueblo and Western Colorado maintained their rankings among the NCAA Division II elite football teams.
The ThunderWolves and Mountaineers are ranked fifth and 11th, respectively, in the American Football Coaches Association’s poll. In the D2football.com poll, CSU Pueblo is ninth, followed by Western Colorado at 10th.
CSU Pueblo is one of eight schools in the AFCA top 25 playing against ranked opponents as the ThunderWolves travel to Hays, Kan., to meet No. 25 Fort Hays State on Thursday. Fort Hays State opened the season with a 35- 14 win at Angelo State, who played at Western Colorado on Thursday.
Other top 25 matchups in NCAA Division II this week have No. 9 Indy hosting No. 15 Findlay on Saturday, No. 12 Ashland entertaining No. 22 Indiana (Pa.) on Thursday, and No. 16 Augustana (S.D.) at No. 19 Minnesota Duluth.
This week’s schedule in the third of four NCAA football classifications for Colorado-based football schools features season-opening games for the Centennial State’s three Football Bowl Subdivision schools: Air Force, Colorado, and Colorado State.
Northern Colorado in the Football Championship Subdivision will attempt to rebound after a heartbreaking 30-29 setback to Big Sky Conference rival Weber State last Friday in Greeley as the Bears host 12th-ranked South Dakota under the lights at Nottingham Field on Saturday.
