Statistics rarely tell the full story of a football game, but on Friday night at War Memorial Stadium, they painted a frustrating picture for the Air Force Falcons.
Despite outgaining the Wyoming Cowboys 387 to 301 in total yardage and controlling the line of scrimmage for long stretches, the Falcons saw their four-game winning streak halted in a 28-14 setback. AFA WEB ARTICLE

The night came down to ball security and missed opportunities. Air Force (5-2, 3-2 Mountain West Conference) moved the ball effectively all evening, racking up 304 yards on the ground within a bruising 78-play offensive output. However, three costly fumbles—including two crucial second-half miscues—derailed the Falcons’ comeback just as they threatened to take control.
Medders Carries the Load Before Sidelined
Sophomore quarterback Evan Medders continued his impressive emergence leading the Air Force offense, turning in another gutsy performance on the ground. Medders paced the Falcon attack with a game-high 115 rushing yards on 21 carries, averaging 5.4 yards per touch.
Air Force chipped away at a halftime deficit coming out of the locker room, putting together a methodical 15-play, 75-yard drive that bridged the third and fourth quarters. Medders kept the option humming, orchestrating a unit that dominated time of possession and squeezed the Wyoming defense.
However, the physical toll of the rivalry matchup caught up to the offense. Medders was forced out of the contest in the second half due to injury, leaving the keys to the triple-option in the hands of the backfield reserves. Without their dynamic signal-caller directing the tempo, the Falcons struggled to sustain their customary rhythm down the stretch.
Second-Half Fumbles Prove Fatal
Trailing 21-14 deep into the second half, the Falcons’ defense repeatedly bowed up, giving the offense chances and holding Wyoming to just 41 total plays. Air Force threatened to pull even or take the lead as they marched deep into Cowboys territory.
Instead, the turnover bug struck at the worst possible moments. Air Force coughed up three fumbles over the evening, two in the second half as the Falcons tried to erase the deficit. Wyoming capitalized on the extra possessions, eventually putting the game out of reach on a late touchdown run by Markell Holman with 3:04 remaining.
Looking Ahead
While the final score stings, the statistical sheet highlights an Air Force team that beat itself more than it was beaten. The Falcons accumulated 23 first downs to Wyoming’s 13 and ran nearly twice as many offensive plays (78 to 41), proving the option scheme can carve up opponents when executed cleanly.
Air Force will look to clean up the ball-security issues during the bye week and regroup as they aim to bounce back in the competitive Mountain West race.
