Friday night on the hardwood delivered a quintessential early-season mix of triumphs and tough lessons for Centennial State college basketball squads. While the Colorado State Rams defended home court in Fort Collins to keep the men’s side unblemished, both the CSU women and the Northern Colorado Bears ran into formidable road buzzsaw performances.
Colorado State Rams: Men Protect Home Court, Women Fall Short in Salt Lake City
The Colorado State men’s basketball team (2-0) continued their early-season momentum with a solid 78-67 victory over Idaho (1-1) at Moby Arena. A balanced, high-octane offensive attack fueled the Rams, led by Kyle Jorgensen and Jase Butler, who each poured in 19 points. Forward Carey Booth chipped in a dominant double-double performance, anchoring the paint with 13 points and 10 rebounds to help secure the double-digit win.
Meanwhile, the CSU women’s team (1-1) faced a steep challenge on the road, dropping a 72-63 decision to Utah (2-0) in Salt Lake City. Despite the tough loss against a high-caliber Pac-12/Big 12-caliber opponent, guard Camryn Runner was a bright spot for the Rams, exploding for a game-high 23 points to keep CSU within striking distance for much of the contest.
Northern Colorado Bears Drop Road Test in Tempe
Traveling down south to the Copper State, the Northern Colorado Bears (1-1) ran into a runaway Arizona State (2-0) squad, falling 90-63 in Tempe.
Despite the lopsided final score, Trinidad State transfer Manning Shareef provided a major spark for the Bears. Shareef led Northern Colorado with 13 points on an efficient 5-of-9 shooting night—including a pair of crucial three-pointers—and added four rebounds and three assists.
