State of Colorado Legacy
One of its primary goals is to recognize and honor the state’s top high school football student-athletes – young men who have distinguished themselves on the field, in the classroom, and in extracurricular and community activities where their leadership abilities are displayed. In addition, the Colorado Chapter works with CHSAA to name the most outstanding player program at all the football championship games (5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A, 8-man & 6-man).
Colorado is the only chapter nationwide that selects collegiate players of the week and a collegiate All-State team, starting in 2003 and now in the 21st straight year of such recognition. In 2014, the chapter began recognizing an Academic All-Colorado team comprised of the state’s 10 football-playing institutions and selecting a Scholar-Athlete of the Year (based on academic and athletic excellence).

The Colorado Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame was chartered on July 1, 1992. It is one of 121 chapters in 47 states that make up the organization. Its members include former players, coaches, athletics administrators, educators, officials, news media, and football fans.
One of its primary goals is to recognize and honor the state’s top high school football student-athletes – young men who have distinguished themselves on the field, in the classroom, and in extracurricular and community activities where their leadership abilities are displayed. The recognized student-athletes are chosen from a field of statewide nominees and selected by an impartial committee. The criteria for selection are based on a combination of athletic ability (40%), academic achievement and character (40%), and citizenship and service (20%).
In addition, the Colorado Chapter works with the Colorado High School Activities Association to name the most outstanding player program at all the football championship games (5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A, 8-man & 6-man).

The College Football Hall of Fame, created by the National Football Foundation in 1951 with 54 inaugural inductees, features a museum in Atlanta, Ga. A total of 1,074 players and 230 coaches, including this December’s 2024 class, have been or will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The players and coaches are inducted annually, and the 2024 ceremony will be held in Las Vegas at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino on December 10.

Now in his 20th year as the president of The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame, Steve Hatchell has plenty of ties to the state of Colorado. A football player at Golden High School, he graduated from the University of Colorado in 1970 where he was a scout team quarterback and equipment manager, and after graduation, an assistant to athletic director Eddie Crowder and co-sports information director for three years before moving on to positions with Colorado State (SID, director of external affairs), and the executive director, commissioner or assistant commissioner positions for the Big 8 Conference, Metropolitan Collegiate Athletic Conference, Orange Bowl, Big 12 Conference and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He was inducted into the CU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017 and the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 2018.
