Trinidad State advances to men’s Region IX basketball finale

Trinidad State College advanced to its fourth-straight Region IX men’s basketball post-season finale as the Trojans posted an 86-77 win over Casper College at the Pronghorn Center in Gillette, Wyo.

With five players scoring in double figures, Amir Reaves led the Trojans with 24 points and had 10 rebounds.  All-American Lateef Patrick added 23 points and nine rebounds.  Kryen Allen added 12 points and 13 rebounds for TSC.

“We did a great job defending. Probably our best effort all year,” said coach Mike Folda, who has guided the Trojans to a 234-198 record (54.2 percent) in 14-plus seasons in Trinidad. “We have had different guys step up in a major way so far.  Just very happy for guys.”

The regional champions the past three seasons to earn a berth in the National Junior College Athletic Association Championships in Hutchinson, Kan., the Trojans (17-14) will play Gillette College at 3 p.m. on Saturday for the title.

All three of the TSC regional titles have been on the road as the Trojans posted championship wins at Otero (LaJunta, Colo.) in 2022 (95-94), Casper in 2023 (78-77), and Western Nebraska (Scottsbluff) in 2024 (81-56).
