What a day for college hoops with the Final Four Saturday evening in San Antonio at the Alamodome.
For those who don’t know, the Alamodome has 64,000 seats and is used for concerts, big events like the Valero Alamo Bowl, and is the home stadium for the University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA) football team.
The two matchups were Auburn vs Florida in the first game, and the second game was Duke vs Houston. Last week, I stated that I had Florida and Duke making it to the Championship game, but I felt scared about Auburn.
In my opinion, the first game was one of the most exciting games in the tournament.
- It was a physical game, but also extremely clean from a defensive standpoint.
- Auburn did a great job on Walter Clayton Jr. by playing the passing lanes and denying him the ball throughout the game. He hit some incredible shots that Auburn contested.
- Auburn did overextend a few times, which created a few drives and offense for the Gators that I would have liked to see be better.
- Auburn led at halftime even after giving up full-court layups.
- Florida played an excellent second half. The Gator tempo led to easier scores in transition than Auburn.
- Overall, I enjoyed watching that game, unlike the second.
As for the second game, I was frustrated to see a team lose a game like that.
- I can’t say that Houston played so great that they just flat out beat Duke.
- For a team to score one field goal in the last 10 minutes of a game is pretty disappointing.
- A little background information that most people don’t know, but if a team goes on a 10-0 run at any point in a college basketball game, they have around a 90% chance of winning.
- I don’t know the stats on if both teams go on a run like that, but they call it a killshot for a 10-0 run.
- When Duke was up by 14 points, Houston went on a 10-0 run, and I thought that Duke would still win the game, but that idea creeped into my head about that stat whenever I see it.
- Even when Tugler reached across on the baseline inbounds and got the technical, I thought that Duke would still win.
- The one other frustration I had was the foul they called on Flagg on the free throw.
- For as physical a game as that was, I would have liked to see a no-call there and let the athletes decide what happens in a situation like that. I felt like the referees influenced that play heavily, and there wasn’t a need for it.
Monday night will be fun to watch as it always is, but I predict that Florida will win the game.
- Florida is a better scoring team than Houston.
- When looking at KenPom statistics, the predictions showed that Duke or Florida were the two teams that met all the criteria to win a national championship, and Houston just beat Duke.
- The Cougars could be the team that messes up the statistics with how well they defend, rebound, and the physical knack that they play with.
Here are some interesting facts: Houston plays Florida Monday night in San Antonio in its home state.
- The last team to play for the title in its home state was Butler in 2010 in its home city of Indianapolis, and it lost to Duke.
- Michigan State did as well in 2009 at Detroit, but lost to North Carolina.
- The last team to win in its home state was UCLA, beating Kentucky in 1975 at San Diego.
- North Carolina State beat Marquette in 1974 in Greensboro.
- In 1988, Kansas beat Oklahoma in Kansas City, not KCKan, but KCMo.
Enjoy the game on CBS.
