Tanner nets hammer podium spot at NCAA Track & Field Championships

With five athletes from the state of Colorado competing Wednesday in the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships, Air Force junior Texas Tanner placed fourth in the hammer to become the first Falcon in 60 years to earn a spot on the podium in a men’s throwing event in the finals.

On his third of six tosses, Tanner posted a 75.22 meters (246’9″) to gain All-American honors and become the first Falcon to place in the hammer throw. Bob Lambert, who finished sixth in the javelin throw at the 1965 championship meet, was the last Falcon to podium in a throwing event.

Tanner will compete again Friday in the discus throw, where he is listed as the sixth-best performer in the field of 24 competitors.

Senior Nick Bianco of Colorado and freshman Brayden Richards were tied for 18th after the first day of competition in the decathlon with 3,788 points. The Centennial State duo starts the final day of decathlon action on Thursday, 691 points behind leader Peyton Bair of Mississippi State.

Northern Colorado junior Jerome Campbell and Colorado sophomore Kole Mathison ended their season on Wednesday.

In the 110-meter hurdles semi-finals, Campbell was clocked in 13.50 seconds to finish fifth in his heat and 11th overall out of 24 competitors to earn second Team All-American honors. He missed qualifying for the finals by 0.10 seconds.

Mathison posted a time of 8:45.05 in the semi-finals of the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase to place 21st overall and miss by nearly 10 seconds of qualifying for the finals.

In addition to the decathletes performing on Thursday, Colorado State field event participants, sophomore Kajsa Borrman and Mya Lesnar, will be competing in the women’s hammer throw and shot put.  While Borrman is ranked 15th (220’8″) in the hammer, Lesnar is the top performer entering the shot put competition with a heave of 64 feet, 3 3/4 inches.
