Air Force and Northern Colorado opened up Saturday’s five-game schedule for Colorado schools by posting wins over Bucknell and Chadron State, respectively.
For the weekend, nationally ranked CSU Pueblo and Western Colorado posted opening wins in NCAA Division II play to join the Falcons and Bears in posting victories for Centennial State schools. Overall, Colorado schools were 4-5, with Colorado Mines idle.

Air Force 49, Bucknell 13 – As usual, Air Force controlled the game throughout as the Falcons scored on six of their first eight drives and added one score on a fumble return to a touchdown. Junior quarterback Josh Johnson passed for two touchdowns while senior Cade Harris rushed for a team-high 66 yards and added two scores on the ground. The Falcons are idle next week and return to action on September 13 at Utah State for their Mountain West Conference opener. READ MORE

Northern Colorado 17, Chadron State 3 – The Bears scored on two of their three first-quarter drives by amassing 171 yards to secure the lead for good in the UNC opener. Quarterback Peter Costelli was involved in both UNC scores as he completed a 60-yard toss to Brayden Munroe for the first score with 10:36 left in the opening quarter. With 10 seconds in the first period, Costelli capped a 14-play, 91-yard drive by scoring on a 19-yard run. The Bears played next Saturday at Colorado State in Fort Collins. READ MORE
William Jewell 34, Fort Lewis 14 – Mistakes hindered Fort Lewis as William Jewell recovered four fumbles, intercepted a pass, and posted six sacks against the Skyhawk offense. Four of the turnovers led to two Jewell touchdowns and two field goals. Fort Lewis cut the Jewell led to 24-14 in the third quarter after taking advantage of a visitor turnover, but could only generate 88 yards on its final six drives. Fort Lewis plays at Arizona Christian in Phoenix next Saturday. READ MORE
Western New Mexico 35, Adams State 21 – The Grizzlies led 21-20 after three quarters, but Western New Mexico scored the final two touchdowns to secure the season-opening win. Adams State turned the ball over six times in the game, including three times in the final period, as the Grizzlies could only muster 24 yards on four drives. ASU hosts Texas Permian Basin next Saturday in Alamosa. READ MORE
Washington 38, Colorado State 21 – The Rams dropped their eighth-straight season-opening game as Washington scored the final 17 points in the contest. After Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi completed a 27-yard touchdown pass for CSU to Jaxxon Warren with 8:01 left in the third quarter, the Huskies amassed 177 yards on their next three drives to break from a 21-21 tie to take command.
